<image:caption>Enjoy the Brush was a workshop I attended at the Enpuku-ji Zen Centre in Montreal, given by renowned teacher, author and artist Kazuaki Tanahashi. I created this short 'movie', set to beautiful music, using still photographs taken during the 3 day experience. The music, entitled Kamui from the CD "Island of Bows" was used with permission from Canyon Records. Kamui was composed by Carlos Nakata and recorded in 1993 at Hounji Temple, Kyoto, Japan by Carlos Nakata and featuring Shonosuke Ohkura, and Oki Kano of the Wind Travelin' Band.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Shodo - Dragon Gate</image:title>
<image:caption>Sankyu nami takoshite uo ryu to ke su 'At the three-tiered Dragon Gate where the waves are high, fish become dragons'. Ink on rice paper This calligraphy was inspired by the work of Shodo Harada, and is taken from an ancient poem in the Blue Cliff Record, "Echo Asks about Buddha". The story goes that in early spring, carp gather at the bottom of a triple waterfall on the Yellow River, known as the Dragon Gate. Legend has it that any fish able to jump to the top of the falls will turn into a dragon. The analogy to human life is that if we, with all our delusions and flawed thinking, can pass through the veils of our mental baggage, we too can become dragons. With effort and determination, we can release our obstructions and ascend to freedom.</image:caption>

<image:title>Shodo - Enjoy the Brush: Homage to Kaz Tanahashi, Sensei</image:title>
For a new spin on mediums, we used high quality watercolour for our learning practice rather than traditional black ink. Sensei Tanahashi used sumi (black ink) and red watercolour in his evening demonstrations.

<image:title>About - Heather MacDonald Ink painting is a sensual experience...</image:title>
<image:caption>it engages all the senses and completely captures my attention. Ink has its own magic, its own way of moving and creating a bond between the brush, the paper and the mind and heart of the painter. Ink has life.</image:caption>
